Coogee is one of the most popular and oldest beach suburbs offering a blend of laid-back beach style to the more elite locals scattered along the southern coast to South Coogee. A hilly suburb that is home to historical buildings such as the newly reformed Pavilion, the Coogee Oval spectator stand, Willies Baths, McIver’s Ladies Baths and the Coogee Surf Club. The beach itself has park areas to the north & south with public bbq’s where you can find a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the vibe throughout the year.

Coogee was gazetted as a village in 1838. The first school was built in 1863, and the building was converted into the Coogee Bay Hotel in 1873 and is said that the name “Coogee” was an aboriginal word for bad smell, with reference to the amount of seaweed washed up on the beach. Three years later, Coogee Public School was established and in late 1887, Coogee Palace Aquarium and swimming baths were constructed. The Coogee Pleasure Pier, a large attraction including a theatre, restaurant and ballroom, was constructed in 1928.

Architectural Style
Coogee features a mix of art deco and terrace style apartments to the high-end luxury homes of Lurline Bay and South Coogee. Due the hilly nature of the Coogee most of the apartment buildings on the outskirts all enjoy ocean views.
